Player Development Officer
Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Oliver Freeman and I am the PDO (Player Development Officer) for Parkland Area Soccer Club for this season.
A BIT ABOUT ME: I am 21 years old and was born and raised in London, England. (So please do not be scared by my accent) I have been playing soccer ever since I can remember, and no other sport. Over here you guys have baseball, basketball and other sports to play, in England, soccer is the only sport.
MY PHILOSOPHY: When I think of soccer, the first word that comes to my mind is fun. We wouldn’t play the game or coach it if it was boring. My primary objective is to create a fun atmosphere within the club so that the children look forward to these sessions as the highlight of their week.
My secondary objective is to develop the player and the person. The subject of my sessions is to develop these children into skillful soccer players. I also want to instill discipline, respect for team mates and opponents as well as a good work ethic. I think these qualities are essential to becoming better soccer players and better people.
“To develop the player, you must first develop the person as a whole”
Juninhio (Brazilian national team 1995 – 2003)
TECHNIQUES I SHALL USE IN MY SESSIONS :
1.Looking at a person’s assets, not their liabilities...the glass is half-full, not half-empty
2.Realizing that every player has assets
3.Replicate, encourage and reward positive behaviors
4.Green Cards given as rewards (there are red and yellow cards for bad behavior, why not a green card for good behavior)
5.Allow players to use the game and the environment to take risks, try new things and express themselves to lift themselves beyond their vision of capability
“It’s better to try something and fail miserably than never try, and spend the rest of your life wondering what could have been”
My mom (mother to Oliver Freeman 1988 – present)
WHY AM I HERE: I am here to coach the game of soccer to children. I have grown up around younger children and enjoyed every minute of it, and I love the game of soccer. This job allows me to combine the two, and the outcome is a great rewarding experience for me, every day.
I am also here for life experience; living in another country for a long period of time I believe is a great way of doing this as I can experience another culture. The more people I meet the better, so if you see me, do not be scared to say hello, I am an approachable guy and usually have a big smile across my face. I would like to meet you and learn as much as possible from you, hopefully coming from another part of the world, you might be able to learn something from me as well.
Thank you for your time, I look forward to seeing you out on the field. Feel free to contact me about any queries you may have, any queries at all. I shall leave you with my contact details and a joke to hopefully brighten up your day.
